Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on 23 October 2026 as a separate purchase, with no Game Pass catalogue access at launch. Activision says inclusion is planned for Holiday 2027. Xbox cloud play is still listed, but its US and UK product pages require both a game purchase and an eligible Game Pass subscription.
That distinction matters on release day because the same Xbox pages advertise cloud streaming while also saying MW4 is not available with Game Pass at launch. The conditions describe two different entitlements: owning the new game and using the service that streams it. A cloud-play listing does not remove the purchase requirement.
Xbox access conditions · US and UK pages
| Route | What the official pages say |
|---|---|
| Game Pass catalogue | MW4 not included at launch; Holiday 2027 window |
| Xbox cloud play | Purchase MW4 + Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate |
| Xbox console online multiplayer | Game purchase; separate Game Pass requirement |
| Xbox Play Anywhere | Buy once for supported Xbox console and PC |
| Xbox One | MW4 not available |
Checked on 23 October. The catalogue window is not an exact date. Conditions here concern Xbox; no US/UK price or hourly unlock time is asserted.
A game licence and a streaming subscription do different jobs
The cloud footnote on both regional Xbox pages lists Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate and explicitly requires buying the game. The console online-multiplayer notice separately names a Game Pass Essential subscription, sold separately. Players should therefore separate the cost of MW4 from any service needed for the way they intend to play.
Activision’s 15 October announcement also says existing Call of Duty titles remain accessible to Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, naming Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III. That continuing access does not include the new MW4 release. The announced Holiday 2027 window gives a broad catalogue timetable, rather than a specific day on which a subscriber can start playing without buying MW4.
One Xbox purchase covers console and PC
For a purchase through Xbox, both regional pages advertise Xbox Play Anywhere: one purchase covers Xbox console and PC at no additional game cost. They identify Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC, and state that MW4 is not available on Xbox One. This entitlement is useful for someone moving between those supported Xbox devices; the pages do not establish that a purchase transfers to a different PC storefront.
The same pages link to Microsoft, Battle.net and Steam as storefront choices. Those links are routes to different purchasing systems, so choose the one associated with the device and account you intend to use. On PC, Xbox also lists TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot as requirements and links to Activision’s support guidance. Xbox also requires an Activision account and says a linked mobile number may be required. Device compatibility and account requirements belong alongside the licence decision, before a download or purchase.
Choose the route that matches the device
US readers can use the Xbox US page below, and UK readers the Xbox UK page; both provide the game’s purchase section and the conditions described here. For Xbox console or PC ownership, select the full game on the intended platform. For cloud use, pair that ownership with one of the subscriptions named in the cloud footnote. The launch announcement also identifies the console Xbox Store, Xbox PC app and Microsoft Store as official buying routes.
The launch-day answer is a separate MW4 purchase. Game Pass can provide a route to streaming or online play under Xbox’s stated conditions, but it does not supply the new game from the catalogue on 23 October. Comparing the device, game licence and service entitlement as three separate choices gives players a clear way to decide what they actually need.
Activision’s 15 October launch statement and the US and UK Xbox product pages were read directly, including cloud and multiplayer footnotes. No publisher motive, exact 2027 entry date, local price or cross-store licence transfer is inferred.
