Banks in eight RBI centres have a listed holiday on Wednesday, 21 October 2026: Agartala, Bengaluru, Gangtok, Guwahati, Kochi, Kolkata, Shillong and Thiruvananthapuram. The RBI’s October holiday matrix marks these centres under the day’s Vijaya Dasami, Durga Puja (Dasain) and Maha Dashami description. It is not a nationwide bank holiday entry.
The question matters during a festival week when a closure on one date or in one city does not settle another branch’s schedule. News reports about 19 or 20 October can remain in search results on the 21st. For a visit today, the relevant comparison is the 21 October column and the RBI centre covering the branch, rather than a general list of festival dates.
Holiday entries for 21–23 October
| RBI centres | 21 October | 22–23 October |
|---|---|---|
| Agartala, Bengaluru, Guwahati, Kochi, Kolkata, Shillong, Thiruvananthapuram | Holiday marked | No holiday marks |
| Gangtok | Holiday marked | Holiday marked on both days |

The eight centres in the RBI calendar
The eight names above come from the entries in that single date column. New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad have no 21 October holiday mark in the same matrix. A blank cell establishes the absence of this calendar entry; it should not be expanded into a guarantee that every branch or service is operating normally.
The RBI table organises holidays by regional office centre. Its description for 21 October combines several festival names, so a national festival label alone is not enough to decide whether a local branch is closed. The comparison table keeps all eight centres attached to the actual marked date before comparing the following two days.
Gangtok has two more holiday entries
Gangtok also has holiday marks on Thursday, 22 October and Friday, 23 October. The other seven centres in the 21 October list have no marks in those two columns. For someone planning branch paperwork in Gangtok, simply postponing Wednesday’s visit by one day would still run into a listed holiday.
That comparison is limited to these three dates. It does not promise a reopening time or override an individual bank’s branch notice. Use the RBI matrix’s office, month and year selectors to check the relevant centre, then the bank’s own branch contact or notice for an appointment. Keeping the date and branch together is more useful than treating a festival-week headline as a uniform national timetable.
Branch visits and online transfers need different checks
A branch holiday does not itself suspend the NEFT payment system. RBI’s direction of 6 December 2019 made NEFT available around the clock on all days, including holidays, from 16 December 2019. The direction provides 48 half-hourly settlement batches each day. This is the system’s schedule, not a promise that an individual bank’s app is always available or that every payment has already completed.
For a branch service, plan around the centre’s holiday entries and the branch’s own arrangements. For a transfer, check the bank’s available payment route and the transaction status it returns. The useful distinction on 21 October is between eight centres’ branch closures, Gangtok’s continuing holidays and a NEFT system designed to operate on holidays. A bank holiday headline alone does not answer all three questions.
The RBI October 2026 matrix was opened in the all-office view and each 21/22/23 date cell was checked. NEFT availability was checked against RBI’s 6 December 2019 direction. No claim is made about stock exchanges, all government offices, fees or uninterrupted app access.
