Northern passengers planning to travel on Monday 26 October face altered services after Storm Boelo damaged the network. Its Sunday evening notice says some routes may remain disrupted in the morning. Tickets dated Sunday 25 October can be used on Northern on 26 or 27 October without extra cost; Avanti has a separate concession for Sunday journeys north of Preston.
The distinction matters because Sunday’s strong advice not to travel is a dated warning, not a blanket ban for Monday. National Rail says disruption may continue even without an active weather warning for Monday. A quieter forecast and a repaired railway are different stages of recovery.
Two separate checks for Monday
| Check | Published arrangement |
|---|---|
| Northern ticket dated 25 October | Use on Northern on 26 or 27 October, no extra cost |
| Avanti ticket dated 25 October, north of Preston | Use on 26 or 27 October under Avanti’s notice |
| Actual train and connections | Check the route, stopping pattern and replacement transport |
| Not travelling because of disruption | Refund through the original seller |
Ticket acceptance does not guarantee normal service. Read the dated operator notice for your journey.
Why repairs can outlast the weather
Network Rail’s 25 October account describes flooding, damaged overhead equipment and fallen trees or debris across the North West. Engineers must inspect, clear and repair affected infrastructure before normal operation can resume. This explains why easing wind does not by itself establish that a particular line is ready for trains.
Northern says overnight repairs are under way between Preston and Bolton. Its Monday plan has trains running directly between Manchester, Bolton and north of Preston, with replacement road transport serving intermediate stations between Bolton and Preston. Other stopping patterns are also altered, and Blackburn–Rochdale services via Bolton and Manchester Victoria are reduced. Open the operator notice below for the route list before choosing a train.
Ticket flexibility is separate from running trains
For postponed journeys, Northern’s 25 October tickets are accepted on its services on 26 or 27 October. Avanti’s notice similarly accepts 25 October tickets for journeys north of Preston on 26 or 27 October at no extra charge. These are operator-specific arrangements. They do not promise that every original train, connection or route will run.
If disruption means you do not travel, or cannot complete the journey, seek a refund from the original seller. Compensation after actually travelling and arriving late is a different process, normally directed to the train company and dependent on its delay rules. Keep the ticket and journey details, then follow the linked refund and compensation guidance rather than treating both claims as identical.
Power cuts and the next check
For a power cut in England, Scotland or Wales, 105 connects callers with the electricity network operator. National Grid’s power-cut page also offers a postcode lookup and restoration updates. The local network operator deals with the damaged network; a household’s electricity retailer is not the same organisation. Keep away from damaged lines and use emergency services where there is immediate danger.
Before leaving on Monday, check the specific departure and any replacement-transport arrangements again through National Rail. Keep the ticket concession alongside that service information: one establishes whether the ticket can be reused, the other whether the journey is possible. Restoration estimates and provisional timetables can change as repairs progress.
